PHYSIC

Physic is the experimental trio of Nick Bates, Shawn Dahlhaus, and Joey Latka based in northern New Jersey. The trio began collaborating as MFA students in Ramapo College’s Creative Music Technology program and they continue to expand on their electro-acoustic practice by infusing elements of improvisation, noise, electronica, acoustic instrumentation, metal, and long-form ambient soundscapes. Their approach to sonic experimentation stems from their interest in dense textures and emotive sound worlds by exploring electro-acoustic techniques that slowly evolve and reveal new details. This approach aims to capture a healing, cathartic release through the physicality and materiality of their sound.

Physic independently released their debut album, Mise En Abyme, on May 2, 2025, with lead single Prism. The album plays with the visual arts concept by taking the same improvised musical motifs, textures, and sound worlds, and experimentally layering the ideas within themselves repeatedly. As the album progresses, each entire track exists in multiple forms within the following track, which creates an exponential layering of the original motifs. Through this layering process, the motifs develop into new forms beyond recognition but still maintain their original DNA, like beams of light that reflect and refract across the stereo field still tethered to their source, or a network of organisms that evolve into new species over time.
